Description of the University of Innsbruck

University of Innsbruck. This is one of Austria's oldest and largest universities. The Institute of Microbiology is one of seven institutes of the Faculty of Biology that focuses on “mycology and soil microbiology”. The Institute of Microbiology comprises three working groups (1) Systematics, Taxonomy and Evolutionary Biology, (2) Applied Microbiology, and (3) Physiology and Ecology.

Dr Strasser (Senior Scientis at the Institute of Microbiology) leads "The BIPESCO Team Innsbruck", which is an international acknowledged group on the control of subterranean pests (e. g. grape phylloxera, scarab, wireworm and weevil pests, western corn root worm) and ticks with mycoinsecticides such as Beauveria spp. and Metarhizium spp., and of diseases (e. g. ESCA, grapevine root rot) with mycoparasitic fungi such as Clonostachys spp. and Trichoderma spp..

The research topics covered by the BIPESCO group include: soil microbiology, structure elucidation of secondary metabolites, plant diseases and biological pest control, risk assessment and registration, exploitation of metabolites from biocontrol agents – subjects highly pertinent to the current project INBIOSOIL. The BIPESCO Team has also considerable experience in applied agriculture, viticulture and pest management. In collaboration with companies, he developed a Beauveria and a Metarhizium product, “MELOCONT®-Pilzgerste” and “GRANMET®”.

Description of the Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon Research Station ART

Research for agriculture and nature

Producing healthy, nutritious food is part of the remit of agriculture in the 21st century, as is protecting our natural resources of soil, water, air, climate, biodiversity and cultural landscape. All this comes at a cost, and should be done as efficiently and sustainably as possible. The Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon Research Station ART has therefore set itself the following targets:

  • We conduct research for environmentally compatible and economically competitive farming. Our primary concern is for a diverse rural area.
  • We develop and assess sustainable plant-production and animalhusbandry systems.
  • We combine ecology, economics and agricultural engineering in a holistic research approach.
  • We create scientific knowledge and decision-making tools for agriculture, government authorities and society.

Description of the Technical University of Munich

The department of Agricultural and Food Economics at the Center of Life and Food Sciences, Technische Universität München Weihenstephan is a  research based institution, amongst others, in the field of:

§  sustainable food production along the value chain: Research – Production – Consumption; and

§  the contribution of the bioeconomy and the agricultural sector in particular to sustainable development.

A major research focus is the analysis of regulations and their contributions to sustainable development from a positive (How do regulations effect …?) as well as a normative (How should regulations for … look like?) perspective.

Research methods applied use tools that explicitly consider irreversibilities and uncertainties.

The production capacity increased up to 80,000 l. E~nema is member of the International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association (http://www.ibma.ch) and part of the BIOCATALYSIS Cluster (http://www.biocatalysis2021.net). From the beginning the company was involved in national and international coordinated research projects aiming the development of new market ready biological agents for plant protection, biocides, biocosmetica and aqua culture.

Klasmann-Deilmann GmbH, KD

Hermann Limbers

Georg-Klasmann-Str. 2-10, 49744 Geeste, Germany

Description of Klasmann-Deilmann

Klasmann-Deilmann is the most successful group of companies in the international substrate industry. With production companies in Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands as well as sales companies and trade partners in more than 70 countries, we lead the world market in this sector. “Klasmann” growing media provide the basis for successful plant cultivation for professional growers all over the world.

At present, Klasmann-Deilmann develops a new business unit within the field of renewable resources and energies. The company cultivates fast-growing tree species in short-rotation forestry and uses wood chips as a source of heat and to produce wood fibre for growing media.

The Klasmann-Deilmann Group generates consolidated sales of more than EUR 150 million p/a and employs 900 people at its sites in Europe, America and Asia.

Klasmann-Deilmann’s mission statement, which is based on the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification, confronts the company with the daily task of assuming responsibility for man, the environment and future generations. For that reason alone, Klasmann- Deilmann faced up to the diverse challenges of protecting the environment at a very early stage. As a result, we now have comprehensive expertise in matters of re- waterlogging former peat extraction sites. Over the long term, this will transform around 4000 hectares back into a typical bog landscape. The company makes a further important contribution to environmental protection with the production of quality compost as well as wood fibres and their increasing use in growing media.
